Maleated PS (Aria Couple PS-g-MA)

Aria polymer PS Coupling Agent (PS Compatibilizer or Maleated PS), known As Aria Couple 1631 is a maleic anhydride functionalized high impact-polystyrene. It has been primarily designed to function as a compatibilizer between PS and polar polymers such as polyamides, polycarbonates, polyesters, etc.

The functionalization of PS by maleic anhydride is an effective way to increase the polarity of polystyrene to enhance its compatibility with other polar polymers so that we can improve properties of polystyrene-based compounds.

In the current era, requirement of the plastics industry are expanding. Many of these needs are not met by pure materials, and this is where the compounding industry comes into play. In this industry, by combining two or more polymers, the properties will be improved. In the compounding industry, phase mixing is a fundamental issue, in which polarity or non-polarity of materials play an essential role.

Due to its remarkable properties and reasonable price as a raw material, polystyrene has found wide applications and these applications are expanding. Polystyrene is found in both crystalline and high-impact forms.

By increasing polybutadiene chains to the polystyrene structure, the impact resistance of this polymer is improved, which is marketed as high-impact polystyrene. With these changes, the properties of the polymer change and as a result, the applications also change. Crystal polystyrene is transparent and prone to cracking due to environmental stresses. In contrast, high-impact polystyrene is translucent to opaque (depending on the amount of polybutadiene used in the structure) and more resistant to environmental stresses. In general, high-impact polystyrene has lower gloss, lower moisture absorption, lower gamma-ray resistance, lower chemical resistance but higher impact resistance than crystalline polystyrene.

Some polymers have non-polar structure, such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. In contrast, polymers with polar structure such as polyamides, polycarbonates and polyesters, etc. are located. In the compounding industry, polar and nonpolar polymers are not fully miscible to achieve the desired properties, and therefore we need materials called compatibilizers.

Why to use Aria Couple?

Since the functionalized Aria Couple®, it can establish chemical bonds with both polar and non-polar structure; adding amounts of a compatibilizer such as Aria Couple® can improve the mixing of the two phases, and therefore a compound with the desired properties can be obtained.

Some of the most prominent specifications of Aria Couple:

  • High grafting level
  • Being odorless
  • Based on high-impact polystyrene which can improve compound impact resistance
  • No residual chemicals
