Tie layer adhesive in multilayer packaging films

With a specific structure, multilayer films have been used in food packaging. These films are designed to protect food for a long time by avoiding permeating gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The gas barrier ability is resulted by combination of polar and non-polar polymers. Poor adhesion between incompatible polymers would be solved by means of a particular type of adhesives: “tie layer”

Common polyolefin-based films should be combined with other polar polymers such as PET, PA and EVOH by co-extrusion to provide ideal multilayered structure containers. But main challenge in multilayer films is adhesion quality between layers. The film performance will be perfect when the incompatibility of the layers has been eliminated. Consequently, the new type of adhesives as adhesion promoters or tie layer resin are designed with bimodal function to provide compatibility to different layers. The functional groups in tie layer cause the chemical interaction (covalent or hydrogen bond) at polar substrate-adhesive interface. Also polymer backbone in tie layer can interact with non-polar resin melt.
